Sacred Heart Parish

Sacred Heart Parish

Sacred Heart Parish

The magnificent Sacred Heart church and school were established by Father Carlos Pinto, S.J. in 1893 to serve the Spanish-speaking Catholic community in Downtown El Paso. The original building was replaced in 1929 by a larger church with a capacity for 2,000 to accommodate the influx of Mexican refugees during the era of religious persecution in Mexico. The church marked its 125th anniversary in 2018 and continues to be served by Jesuits. This endowment fund helps support the life and programs of the parish.

About This Fund

Today, the Sacred Heart community has a strong and abiding spirit which is especially evident in its joyful and faith-filled liturgies.

  • In addition to a very vibrant sacramental life, Sacred Heart has an adult education program offering courses in Citizenship, English as a Second Language, GED, and Computer Literacy.
  • Sacred Heart’s Pastoral Services Center includes a job search office, a food pantry, and a chapter of the St. Vincent de Paul Society.
  • Year round, the parish has an evening recreation and enrichment program for neighborhood children.
  • The parish operates La Tilma Mexican Grill – a ministry of Sacred Heart in El Paso’s Segundo Barrio.
  • There is also a plaza dedicated to Padre Pinto and his accomplishments in the courtyard of Sacred Heart Parish that connects the church to the school building. The many plaques on the walls tell of Father Pinto’s amazing contributions to El Paso
