Farewell to Br. Nick Gonzalez
Farewell to Br. Nick Gonzalez

The De La Salle Christian Brothers announced earlier this year the appointment of Brother Nick Gonzalez, FSC, as the new Assistant to the Provincial of the District of San Francisco New Orleans. The district covers eight states and 22 Lasallian schools. Brother Nick will be responsible for the Christian Brothers in educational ministry as well as the spiritual and educational formation of aspiring young Brothers. This promotion means that Cathedral High School will have a strong advocate at the provincial level where decisions are made. Brother will report to his new assignment in Napa, California in July.

Brother Nick Gonzalez, Cathedral High School Class of 1980, served the all boys high school, founded in 1925, over three decades in several roles and returned to Cathedral in 2011 to serve as principal and later president. As one of Cathedral’s beloved teachers, “favorite sons” and the face of Cathedral, Brother Nick leaves an indelible mark on the school as an alumni, religious, administrator, and advocate for students.

During Brother Nick’s tenure, Cathedral High School added a Chinese Mandarin class through a partnership with the Confucius Institute of New Mexico State University. The relationship has provided Cathedral students opportunities to learn from native Chinese teachers and for a select group of students to travel to China each summer. Brother Nick fostered the Lasallian Volunteers, a program that brings college graduates from prestigious and select universities to work with students at schools and agencies of the Brothers, to develop Cathedral men’s faith through retreats, border immersion programs, and class level bonding exercises and activities.

Brother Nick is a fixture at Cathedral sporting and social events as well as in the El Paso community and beyond. He serves on the board of the UMC Children’s Hospital, St. Mary’s University in Winona, Minnesota, San Miguel High School, and the District Board for the Christian Brothers.

Please join the El Paso community in a farewell gathering for Brother Nick on Saturday, June 22 from 4-8pm in the Cathedral High School Multipurpose Building.

Cathedral High School graduated their 93rd class of men in 2019. The Foundation manages several endowed funds for Cathedral High School. Please consider a gift in honor of Brother Nick’s commitment and vocation.
